Shelby Focus ST is Available for Order:

It was pretty exciting to hear that the Ford Focus ST would be coming to the U.S. as we historically haven’t gotten the fun Fords that Europe has in the past, and so far the Focus ST has not disappointed.

Since its introduction, tuning companies have been enjoying the car as much as consumers. Cobb Tuning, MS Design, Steeda, Hennessey, and even Cosworth had a stab at tuning it and well, now it’s Shelby’s turn to work their motoring magic on the Focus ST and I’m sure if the late great Carroll Shelby was still with us today he’d approve of the car, but he might have upgraded the engine more and added some additional colors to the standard 6 that come with the stock Ford Focus ST.

That said, your options are still many in the looks department. While there are only the 6-stock colors to choose from, there are 3-sets of decals and racing stripes which come in all the stock colors minus yellow. You can also customize the pit stripe colors and choose between 2-sets of wheels, black and silver.

For the rest of the car, there are few options. Almost everything is included in the price which is a whopping $38,699, just about $15k more than a stock ST. But for that extra cash, what do you get?

In the performance department you get front & rear Shelby spec brake upgrades, Shelby wheels & tires, short-throw shifter, Shelby/Ford racing suspension, and a Borla cat-back exhaust.

In addition, the exterior gets a new hood with vents, carbon fiber body accents, and Shelby badges & graphics. The interior gets new seats that match the exterior color and the engine gets an over-the-top carbon fiber dress up kit. And if you’re really a Shelby buff, you can drive your Focus ST right off the assembly line, for an additional $750 of course.

You’ll have to ask about the Shelby Performance Tune, Adjustable Eibach Suspension, and “more options to follow,” since they’re listed, but have no pricing or details available.

So is the price worth it? Well, for the amount of upgrades and the fact that Shelby says they will only be making 500 units each year, I venture to say… maybe. If you’re fortunate enough to have some other Shelby toys hanging around the garage, why not add the Focus?

If you’re not fortunate enough to have a garage full of Shelbies, you can still go over to Shelby’s site and have some fun building your own dream Focus. I wasn’t so fond of the taxi cab look so I spent a while creating my top seven combinations as you can see above, my combination of choice being the bottom one in Performance Blue with satin black Shelby Competition stripes, red pit stripes, and black wheels, unless of course you can special order the satin black stripes on Tuxedo black paint as that combination is not available for selection on their site.

What would your Shelby Focus ST look like? Build ‘em and send ‘em to me!

The Cave of Crystals near Chihuahua, Mexico.

Those giant crystals of gypsum (CaSO4) probably grew to their massive size really slowly in a bath of hot water and dissolved minerals. Now that the water has been pumped out by industrial miners, scientists are free to explore…with the help of some ice-cooled orange jumpsuits: The caves average a termperature of 118 F, and 90 % humidity.

Hurricane Sandy Empowers a Film It Almost Destroyed

On October 28 of last year, Sam Fleischner was riding the A train out to Rockaway. With him were an autistic child actor, a lighting guy, sound guy — an entire film crew in fact, all under his direction. To hear the name of the film, Stand Clear of the Closing Doors, is to understand that the location was an appropriate one; it’s the story of a 13-year-old autistic boy played by Jesus Sanchez who gets lost on the subway for 10 days. When it’s not taking place on the A train, Stand Clear unfolds in the Rockaways, where the boy’s mother is on a frantic mission to find him. The real-life story (documented in a New York Times article in 2009) that inspired the film takes place in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. But Fleischner saw parallels between the subway and the ocean, and he wanted the family in his film to live nearby. It was four days before Fleischner’s film was scheduled to wrap, and he needed all the time in the subway he could get. But Hurricane Sandy had other plans.
